RE-MEMBERING THE HINTERLANDS

Having participated in the intentional practice of not solely doing music but being communal musick, we learned new lessons about ourselves and relational possibilities for co-musicking, health, and healing. Our shared work has led us to confront the continued erasure and displacement of Black and Indigenous healing wisdom from music and health discourse and to tend to its reclamation and continued growth within healing spaces, acknowledging the many possibilities it currently holds, and may have held, uninterrupted by systems of colonization. Holding knowledge of medical models and Euro-dominant therapeutic perspectives often elicited to define theory across community music, sound-based healing, and music therapy, we more deeply situate ourselves in the re-membering, or the elemental re-construction, of collective memory, cultural aesthetics, spirituality, embodiment and their meanings within social contexts consistent with liberatory practices. Our radical return is not to the appropriation of pseudo-shamanic work commonly evoked across music and health but a recentering of Black and Indigenous improvisational practices of music within everyday life. In so doing, this return recognizes the interplay between the fields and that which has been displaced as hinterlands in broader discourses of music and health, as well as embraces the tending fields of labor and care, the radically reimagined fields where we re-member and dream, and the spaces of possibility and of play that we engage daily to garner more potent ways of being together.

We invite you to peer with us into these nondominant spaces, in sacred recognition of all those who surround and move through us and those we have the honor to move through as well. This invitation serves not as an overdue eulogy of those past (because they are very present!) but as a necessary recognition of the imaginative workings that we all stand in the stream of while being in creative synthesis. Together, our synthesis is a variegated quilt enveloping and forming our experiential selves. Here, we gently pry open a few of the countless seams of this quilt, for you to glimpse the vast cosmos aflow behind each thread. Everything written and perceived thus is a snapshot of this ever-churning process that will change and morph with the flow of learning and living. As we look out into these spaces, played within the hinterlands, may we carry this deep knowing in our daily lives.
